Q:

When I try to import a non-OpenWrite document, a panel tells me that OpenWrite finds "binary data in ASCII file".

A:

The file conversion filter for the imported document's file format is not installed. When the proper filter is not installed, OpenWrite tries to import the document as ASCII. If the file format is not an ASCII-based format (like MS-Word), it will contain binary data.
