SOCKS is an alternate way of doing security before proxy. As we understand it, there is really no need for SOCKS now that there are proxy servers. Proxy is more general and robust. You can also configure a proxy server to use SOCKS itself. It does not need to be done on the client side as long as the proxy server "knows" about SOCKS.
There is now a SOCKS plug-in bundle available for OmniWeb 2.0 from OmniGroup .
