When I drag my custom objects off the palette, the objects do not appear where I place them, but instead appear at a random place on the canvas.

You should upgrade to version 2.1, where we fixed this problem. You have stumbled upon a 2.0 bug that has to do with grouping line segments with objects. We have seen some strange behavior when grouping line segments whose endpoints are selected.
Try to re-construct your palette items, and this time when you group line segments together make sure you select only the lines themselves and not the endpoints. Make sure that none of the endpoints of any of the lines are selected when you do a group.
The palette item should now track properly as you drag it out onto your drawing.
