Q:

Is it true that I can only use NEXTSTEP live linking on images and not text?

A:

Yes, this is true. There are no NeXT applications that source and/or link ascii or rtf text yet. The reason is that for object linking, programs need to pass an object id, or possibly a well-defined region, between them. To try and define a chunk of text to link introduces a host of problems. For instance, what happens when new text is added in the middle? Or words are moved around?. Although it's technically possible to implement in NEXTSTEP, no one has defined a standard for doing so.
