The line tool does not permit me to move or fix the point at which objects are connected. Apparently there is some type of "center of gravity" type connection rule for linking two objects. Can I override this rule?

To move or fix the point at which an object is connected, try this:
1) Drag a point out from the palette and drop it at the point where you want to connect to, let's say on the edge of a circle.
2) Group the circle with the point you dragged out. (Select them both and do a Command-g)
3) Now you can connect a line from another object to that point on the circle. Now the point at which it's connected is fixed.
