I'm having trouble opening old Diagram! 1 files in Diagram! 2.

You should be able to find and open your Diagram!1.x files and pallettes with the Open panel in D!2. If you are having trouble doing this, try logging out and back in (this will do a make_services). Also make sure the Diagram.app is in a standard folder that the Workspace looks in (such as /LocalApps or ~/Apps), or place it on your application dock.
Another difficulty stems from an incompatibility with Diagram!2.1 (the newest, fat binary, version) and NEXTSTEP 3.0. The (fat) services that do the Diagram 1 file conversion do not work under 3.0. The solution is either upgrade to NEXTSTEP 3.1, or use Diagram 2.x, or use the Lipo program to suck out the Intel version of the filter service and make it Motorola only.
